If you (like me) are a fan of Shonda Rhimes (the brilliant mind behind Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder and For The People etc.) then you probably heard about her deal with Netflix and that the first of their content is out in the world. I am, of course, talking about Bridgerton. You may already be familiar with the books they’re based on or your social media feeds are now filled with Bridgerton content and memes. Either way, it’s being hailed as Gossip Girl meets Downton Abbey. So, if you’re a fan of either of those shows or you like a steamy, period drama with scandal, here are 4 reasons to watch Bridgerton right now…
Have you ever found yourself wondering what dating was like in high society London during the Regency era? Well, look no further. This isn’t your classic boy meets girl rom com, the show looks at the ins and outs of being a debutante during marriage season, the various reasons people get married and female empowerment. Plus, you’ll find yourself absorbed in Daphne and Simon’s love story from the start. Let’s be honest, most of us can relate to how holding someone’s hand right now seeming like a big deal (thanks to Miss Rona and social distancing.) Plus, the whole premise takes place under the watchful eye of Lady Whistledown, a Gossip Girl-esque narrator who anonymously reports on the scandal. Love it! Fair warning, there are a lot of explicit scenes, so maybe don’t make Bridgerton a family watch…

Ever wondered what Thank U Next (Ariana Grande) and Wildest Dreams (Taylor Swift) sounded like as instrumentals played by an orchestra? Well, you’ll definitely know after watching Bridgerton. The soundtrack is the perfect blend of contemporary pop and classical strings, making the show feel current without taking you out of the time period the show is set in. Truly a feat! Music is such a huge part of many stories, if it’s something that’s important to you when dating, check out CLiKD!
It’s clear that Netflix spared no expensive on the sets and costumes. If you pause the show at any given moment, chances are what you’ll see could make for a stunning painting. After watching the show, if you don’t want to promenade over a bridge wearing stunning colours, with beautiful blooms as your backdrop, then you’re doing it wrong.

One of the best parts of the show is its ensemble cast. 3 words. Regé. Jean. Page. He stars as Simon (the internet’s latest boyfriend and great talent, so happy he’s getting the recognition he deserves.) There’s also Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne, Nicola Coughlan, Adjoa Andoh, Jonathan Bailey, Claudia Jessie, Ruby Barker, the list goes on. They’re all phenomenal in their roles. Then, there’s the narration of the show (Lady Whistledown) provided by none another than Julie Andrews! If that’s not enough to get you interested, I don’t know what to tell ya! Plus, it’s amazing to see a period drama with diversity that isn’t just people of colour only showing up as the help, they’re actually experiencing enriched lives. Representation matters!
So, there you have it! 4 reasons to watch Bridgerton right now. Let’s be honest, with lockdown 3 now in place, we know you’re looking for new things to binge. Enjoy!
